What is tie-dye?

Tie-dye literally means tying and dyeing and that is exactly what you do. You tie a piece of clothing together in one or more places with a piece of string or elastic and put it in a dye bath. The idea is to make nice patterns in different colours on the textile. This dyeing technique originated in the 1960s and was often worn by the hippie community. Currently, the tie-dye technique is back and super hip to do and wear.

How does it work?

1. Take a piece of clothing, for example a T-shirt or jumper and wash it first.

2. Squeeze the textile and turn around until you get a sort of snail shell pattern. Tie the rubber bands around it.

3. Set up your workstation, place the plastic tablecloth on a straight surface, such as a table or desk. Put on the plastic gloves.

4. Add water to the desired colour paint bottle(s) and shake well. Now the fun starts! Spray the paint over the garment. You can use different colours or just one.

5. Place the garment in a sealable plastic bag and leave for 6 to 8 hours.

6. Remove your artwork from the bag, remove the rubber bands and rinse well. Put it in the washing machine (not with other clothes) and let it air dry.

7. Your tie-dye creation is ready to be worn, enjoy!
